About the Brand

About

This Is Not Legal Advice is a legally-inspired lifestyle brand rooted in creativity, sarcasm, and substance. Founded by a law student who needed a break from outlining and a better way to process doctrine, the brand reimagines legal culture through bold design and original art—giving space to question, laugh, and resist the pressure to always be “professional.”

At its core, This Is Not Legal Advice is about building community. The brand prioritizes working with other small businesses, artists, and independent manufacturers—especially those who value ethical production, sustainability, and transparency. Whether it’s sourcing from small-batch print shops or collaborating with local creatives, the goal is to grow in a way that uplifts others in the process. This is more than a brand—it’s a network of people doing meaningful, scrappy, resilient work, often while under-caffeinated and overcommitted.

Founding Story

This Is Not Legal Advice started when I was supposed to be studying for finals—but instead of outlining legal ethics, I designed a hoodie about it. Turns out, making clothes about law actually helped me understand it. (Take that, casebook.)

Now it’s a full-on brand for people in and around the legal field—law students, lawyers, activists, and anyone who’s ever cried over a cold call and then Googled “Is this tortious?” just to cope. Our designs are rooted in real legal concepts, built with original art, and always come with a side of sarcasm. We make pieces that remind you that, yes, this is commerce—and that a Fourth Amendment violation means your evidence is inadmissible.

This isn’t just merch. It’s a coping mechanism that accidentally became a business. It’s for the people who brief cases in the margins, argue about policy in group chats, and keep showing up even when the system is stacked. Wear it while outlining, spiraling, or pretending you don’t have 300 pages to read by tomorrow.

  • Alyssa is a multi-hyphenate entrepreneur, law student, and single parent currently pursuing a joint JD and Tax LLM. She founded This Is Not Legal Advice, a legally-themed lifestyle brand built during finals week and fueled by caffeine, sarcasm, and a deep love for turning doctrine into design. Her work sits at the intersection of humor, justice, and survival—and somehow manages to be all three.

Since 2019, she has run her own businesses, all while navigating the joys of parenthood and the chaos of legal education. Her brand reflects her approach to life and law: sharp, subversive, and never afraid to say what everyone else is thinking (but probably shouldn’t say in court). Whether she’s briefing cases or building a business, she’s doing it her way—and usually on deadline.
