About the Brand

About

Taylor Shellfish Farms has been farming high quality, sustainable shellfish in the Pacific Northwest since the 1890s. They offer a variety of shellfish including oysters, clams, mussels, and geoduck, available for local pickup or nationwide shipping. They also provide an oyster bar experience with locations in Seattle, WA, and offer wholesale options for restaurants and distributors. INNOVATORS OF SUSTAINABLE SHELLFISH FARMING
As a company whose product relies on clean water and healthy ecosystems, we have long been stewards of the marine environment. Sustainability is not only important to our day-to-day operations, but also to planning for the health of our environmental future. It is our goal to protect the environment that our livelihoods depend on so we can continue to farm the tidelands for another 120 years!

Founding Story

As a family-owned and operated business for over a century, we have deep roots in the Pacific Northwest. We take pride in the work we've been doing since 1890, it all began in Totten Inlet with the tiny Olympia Oyster when our great-great-grandfather began farming oysters in the waters of the Puget Sound. Since then, every generation of the Taylor family has grown up with a passion for shellfish and for the close-knit communities and rugged landscapes of Western Washington. Our grandfather, Justin Taylor, saw Puget Sound’s potential for a thriving shellfish farming community.
He was a strong advocate for water quality and an innovator of farming techniques. Justin instilled these values and ambitions in us. Today the company is led by Bill and Paul Taylor and their brother-in-law Jeff Pearson who have grown our company past the tidelands bringing our product from tide to table. In the last thirty years they have expanded our product line to include geoduck, mussels and a variety of specialty half-shell oysters. They have created a family environment of over 500 dedicated employees, including their children. We are proud to be part of the rich tradition of shellfish farming in the Pacific Northwest.
We strive to share our knowledge and passion for shellfish with our customers, fellow shellfish farmers, and any who have interest in aquaculture! Whether you're a seasoned seafood enthusiast or a curious newcomer, we invite you to learn about the journey from tide to table.

One thing we’ve learned over the years is that consistently producing high quality shellfish requires a long-term commitment to people and place. Our dedication to quality, sustainability, and community is reflected in every product we offer. From our family to yours, we hope you enjoy all the fresh shellfish our region has to offer!

Sappho and the Crisis of Rapture

Sappho, named for the lauded Greek lesbian poetess, is a planetary body discovered in 1864. Orbiting the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, Sappho circles the sun approximately every 3.5 years. Larger than 99% of asteroids at roughly the size of Rhode Island, some astrologers consider Sappho like an intermediary in the octave progression linking Venus (romantic love) and Neptune (unconditional love).

This Coastal City in Washington Is a Foodie Hidden Gem—Here's Where to Find Great Oysters and an Incredible Live-fire Restaurant

Wanting to try some of the area’s prized bivalves for myself, I drove 30 minutes south to Taylor Shellfish Farms, where five generations of the Taylor family have raised oysters since 1890. The farm also has an oyster bar that serves chilled seafood, local beer, and crisp white wine. I sampled Shigokus (meaty with a saline punch) and slurped Fat Bastards, their melony finish lingering on my palate. Both varieties originated at this farm, where they’re grown in bags floating in Samish Bay. As the bivalves tumble in the tides, they develop firm, flavorful flesh.
